The jury

The Jury is composed of 10 international human rights NGOs. See front page for links to the 10 organizations.

The Jury is fully independent and even the Board of the Foundation has no say on its decisions. The Jury meets at least once a year in Geneva, at the invitation of the Mayor of the City. Its meetings and deliberations are confidential.

Since May 2010 there is a personal position of Chair of the Jury, currently occupied by Hans Thoolen. The function entails lead the meetings of the Jury and to provide a voice to the Jury in between meetings. The Chair does not vote on the selection of the Laureate.

The Jury decides on its own composition and makes its own rules but the Board provides guidance in all matters except the selection of the nominees and laureates.

The Jury members pay an annual fee.

The Jury functions as an advisory body to the Martin Ennals Foundation.
